The most challenging places for a person who wears a hearing aid are busy crowded restaurants, stadium football fields, bars, weddings or anywhere there is a lot of people talking at one time and perhaps music or other noises.
Countless hearing-impaired people leave their hearing aids in a drawer to gather dust because they are uncomfortable wearing a hearing aid even though it helps them hear well. The reason for this is mainly because of the static and feedback which is like a whistling sound that everyone around them can hear. Hearing aids are more of a ‘vain’ type aid because people do not think twice about wearing glasses in order to help them see better but when it comes to hearing aids, people are sometimes hesitant at first.
A recent advancement in hearing aid technology comes from Siemens hearing aids that have developed a new hearing aid that identifies the location of a speaker’s voice and then automatically adjusts itself to minimize surrounding noises so that the hearing impaired person may hear only the speaker’s voice.
The Siemens hearing aid is called Triano 3 BTE and it amplifies sounds coming from the area directly in front of the user while at the same time minimizing signals and sounds from all other directions. Once the Siemens hearing aid gathers a sound, it “then pass through a 16 channel signal processing unit, which identifies the type of speaking situation and automatically switches to the optimum background-noise reduction program.” A clear sounding voice is the r
esult and this requires less effort to hear on the hearing impaired person’s part.
Many hearing aids manufacturers are coming up with smaller, in the ear hearing aids so they may go almost undetected, especially if a person has long hair. It is important to see an audiologist or a doctor of hearing when having your hearing tested so that you can get both your hearing tested and your hearing aid fitted correctly in the same place. Many audiologists only fit hearing aids or sell discount hearing aids but do not practice the diagnostic hearing tests.
